Apple officially discontinues the third next-generation Apple TV, still has no comments about it.
The updated Apple TV box was first out in the market back in 2015. It had loads of great apps and features are truly incredible, which set it apart from the crowd. Especially the Apple TV youtube and Netflix services. TV and smartphone releases are always exciting, but when it comes to Apple, new releases are something extraordinary. However, some years after the TV’s release, Apple is killing it off. The news, along with other mac news has gone wildly viral on several apple blogs.
According to an email sent out by Apple to employees and all the other education partners, Third Next-gen Apple TV has officially been discontinued. This confirms the rumors that have been flying around for quite a while now. The email was later acquired by 9to5mac apple blog, It says-
Effective immediately, Apple TV (3rd generation), MD/199LL/A, has reached end of life and is now discontinued. The Apple Supply team is going to fulfill all shippable backlog.
Apple directs its partners and employees towards the fact that there are other Apple products available for sale. But for now, they will be working on a backlog for the hardware. The company cut out the TV gradually, taking small steps and then going for complete removal from all the Online Stores it is partners with. Last month, we got a compelling hint that Apple is eventually going to phase the device out as there was severe difficulty in locating the device in online stores. Retail stores had begun pulling it off their shelves and.
For now, the company is selling Apple TV’s spruced up models at nearly $59 each. The price being a reason, supply of the refurbish models are never enough for the demand. We therefore expect it to finish off soon as well. Also, Apple will likely phase out the third next-gen model completely after the refurbished ones disappear.
What could the reason be
The decision is not very surprising as Apple has lately been concentrating on tvOS-powered fourth-gen Apple TV. The third-gen model was introduced in 2012 and was quietly updated a year later. Like while every Apple update, rumors flew around and eventually died down.
There is no information regarding whether the third generation Apple TV will receive any updates in future. The chances are unlikely. However, February saw a minor update with some impressive security fixes and new apps. We expect Apple to officially comment on the situation soon and finally break the silence. That is what the company mostly does after taking a step like this one. Some odds point at the possibility that the company will keep its silence this time.
The fourth-gen model proves to be the preliminary focus of Apple for now and it seems updates will soon arrive and will continue to for some years to come as well.
