Apple watch series 2 has been out in the market for nearly a month now and it offers loads of new features and changes. What all can you expect from the Series 2?
Apple’s first ever waterproof watch is gathering all the appreciation, catching eyes of people quite accustomed to smartwatches. If you are one of them, this one is going to be a true boon. The Apple Watch Series 2 arrives a year and a half after the original Apple Watch first went on sale. And as we had expected, it has some really exciting features that will be reason enough for you to go for it.
The Watch OS 3 gains pace quick available as a free upgrade to Apple watch owners just like iOS 10 is. And likewise, it proves to be an amazing update for the Apple watch experience as a whole. Improving the functionality and making tasks even easier for users. Apple sure knows how to keep its customers happy and satiated. However, it also likes its money. Will that be the reason for lower sales of the hardware?
“We’re thrilled with the response to Apple Watch and how it’s changed people’s lives. We are committed to fitness and health and think our customers will love the new capabilities of Apple Watch Series 2,” said Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer.
The watch is literally packed with incredible features and covers various aspects of life where users might need the watch. Apple is very close to perfection. Here they are:
The previous watch models did not quite live up to our expectations when it came to Health and Fitness features. The GPS system and the lousy heart rate information it provided was seriously far from the potential of that Apple symbol. The company seems to have realised this fairly. It has, therefore, introduced them all in the new watch series and is rocking it in the market and among the users. People are even calling it the “Fitness key to smartwatch survival”. Well, it is not that perfect.
- You can now Surf or swim without constant bothering to take your watch off first. The hardware is going to give you less of that hard time. The watch is rated water resistant to 50 meters of any water sport.
- Apple Watch series 2 has a built-in GPS which makes it easier to record precise distance, pace and speed. This might come in handy while walking, running or cycling. Moreover, you don’t even need to carry your iPhone around for the task. Just like the global positioning features of Samsung’s Gear S3.
- We get the heart rate sensor here as we did in the Apple watch series 1. Only it is more efficient and functioning better. Track your heart rate throughout the day and during a workout. Observe your progress with the integration of third-party apps and the data directly going to Apple health.
- The new Apple watch can count laps, track average lap pace and auto-detect stroke type. This might come in handy to fitness freaks as it facilitates measurement of the calories burnt.
“The ideal person for the Apple Watch 2 is someone who’s on the go a lot, is constantly carrying things. A person who’s not averse to running or cycling.” says Gareth Beavis From Techradar.
Apple watch users might be a little familiar with the new beta and its features. Although the update comes at the expense of Glances, the boxes of ‘glanceable’ information you used to access by swiping up, it still can’t be denied that it is packed with possibilities and surely makes the watch better in most terms. WatchOS 3 is a smoother, more efficient experience.
The new Instant Launch dock avoids any hang time on your apps. It keeps them running in the background whenever you need them. Glances were a quick and easy way to sneak a look at information like heart rate or the weather forecast. It will be missed a lot with the new update.
Not to mention messaging is much better now with the update. Quickly reply to texts by tapping twice in succession, this will make things way swifter. Express yourself visually with all the new animated stickers and full-screen effects as well. Also, you can write custom replies with a scribble, even in Mandarin (for all the Chinese users out there).
Moreover, it has new, much cooler watch faces that will make your experience with the update very exciting and fun. All you have to do is swipe edge-to-edge to swap out a new watch face and with the new Face Gallery in the Apple Watch app on your iPhone. Minie mouse, numerals or your activities, anything can be your new watch face. It’s like a bunch of new Apple wallpaper amenities being provided to the users.
If only Apple had introduced this watch about two or three years ago. At least it is out now, inflation already did its deed. The new watch has a new second generation dual-core S2 chip processor and new GPU, which makes me wonder the marvellous speed Apple watch 2 series is offering. The processor is about 50 times faster than the one in previous Apple watch.
Moreover, Apple watch series 1 is now going to combine the new powerful dual-core processor as well. That will come along with GPU with all the features of the original Apple Watch included. This is going to benefit the users of previous watch series providing much better speed and efficiency.
Apple Watch Series 2: Design and Display
The series two is available for pick in 38mm and 42mm case sizes, which is identical to the original Apple watch. Moreover, It’s waterproofing feature adds more utility to the hardware with both pool swim and open water swim options for regular swimmers. The watch series 2 is available in lightweight aluminum or stainless steel cases. Therefore, it would not feel bulky on your wrist.
There are a number of colours the watch comes in including silver, gold, rose gold and space grey finishes. Although it is available in stainless steel material, nothing compares to the new white ceramic model. This is four times harder, and therefore more durable than stainless steel is. Apple has indeed ditched the old gold plating in the new watch series.
Apple went for the same sapphire glass material in its new ceramic Watch Edition. However, the standard Series 2 uses the ION-X strengthened glass, which was featured on the original Apple Watch Sport. You can still benefit from Force Touch and navigate your watch.
Also, some big changes have been made in the display of the new watch model making it two times brighter than its predecessor, which had 450 nits of brightness. The new one offers 1,000 nits of brightness sweeping the previous series right off the table when it comes to display. According to Apple, the Apple watch series 2 has the brightest screen it has created for absolutely any of its devices. The struggle of working out what the screen is displaying on a sunny day is something we are all familiar with. Well, that will certainly not be a problem anymore.
Apple teaming up with Nike?
The long-standing partnership of two of the biggest companies in the world finally pays off as a new variant of Apple Watch geared specifically toward runners launches out. The Apple watch Nike+ combines the Apple watch series 2 with a number of cool Nike bands increasing the grace of its tempting design even further. We have sporty Nike spunk in the new Apple watch update. How good can things get?
In the Nike model of Apple watch, some features have been tweaked with making them quite better than the rest of the models. Hardware wise, the model is lightweight and breathable. Distraction free hardware, as Apple describes it- Basic metrics like calorie count and steps are very easily accessible.
“We know runners – and we know many are looking for a device that gives them an easy, fun way to start running,” said Trevor Edwards, president of the Nike Brand. “It’s a powerful device with a simple solution – your perfect running partner.”
There have been some changes though many remain same. Apple Watch Nike+, like all Apple Watch Series 2 models, features built-in GPS to track pace, route, and distance . Again, you wouldn’t need to carry an iPhone around because the watch is a whole lot more than enough for the purpose. There’s a feature called ‘Motivation’ in the watch model that will keep pushing you to do more and more throughout the day. A little encouragement is all we need sometimes. Also, you can keep a check on the latest workouts of your friends and family. You can coordinate a weekly fitness activity with another feature, ‘Just Do It Sundays’.
Nike’s existing Run Club software recommend fitness gear, provide access to nearby fitness events directly through the watch and deliver personalized coaching. The Apple Watch Nike+ starts at $370.
Price Tags on current models
Here is the part we all have been waiting for since a while before the release last month. Brace yourself to loosen your pockets and handing some handsome money to Apple. This, the prices are as high as we imagined them to be.
The Apple watch 2 paired with a Sports Band starts at $269 in U.S in gold, rose gold, silver or space gray aluminum cases. The watch paired with other variety of bands starts at $369 in gold, rose gold, silver or space gray aluminum, or silver or space black stainless steel cases. While the fancy ceramic Apple Watch Edition starts at a good $1249. Other than Nike+, Apple Watch Hermès starts at $1149.
Although two-day battery life and other features are great, it seems Apple took it too pricey this time. Sales are on peak anyways. Apple watch series 1 has dropped down to just $199 which serves as a benefit as well.
What users have to say
Features and specs of the new hardware are one thing that can be kept aside. Public response is the key factor to sales and therefore is important as well. These are some comments we recently gathered from several Apple blogs and social media sites around the internet. Some of them are very positive, while the others highly contradicting. Some suggest Apple to make some additions to improve. Here is what Apple users out there have to comment on the new launch-
“The apple watch looks 1000% better than nearly all of the smart watches out there, especially the ones that are primarily focused on fitness.” says the beauford on the wearable.com
People are surely not backing off from the fact that the watch is highly expensive of all. Some tweets highlight their concerns well.

On positive side, #applewatch2 still more than 50% charged at 11pm. Not bad.

“Needs to alert when the phone is out of proximity like the Pebble does, that’s saved me from leaving my phone behind in some very inconvenient places many times.” says pvogel

“They should add ant+ connectivity, this would really shake up the fitness wearable world. You could then connect it to multiple sensors at once, and free up the Bluetooth to listen to music.” says Xiatianfa
